Adult & Senior Eye Exams
Even if your eyesight is stable and your eyes seem healthy, annual comprehensive eye exams give us the opportunity to get to know your eyes. With this knowledge, we can establish a baseline for your ocular health, which allows us to detect even the smallest changes in your eyes, even before you notice them.
Eye exams are even more important as we age since those over 65 face unique ocular risks. Age-related ocular diseases are the leading causes of blindness and low vision in the United States. Our goal is to ensure your vision remains strong and clear well into your golden years.
To protect your ocular health and vision, we recommend adults and seniors undergo annual eye exams. If this isn’t needed, your optometrist will provide you with an alternative schedule.
Diabetic Eye Exams
Diabetes is a systemic disease that impacts your body’s ability to process blood sugar. If your blood sugar level remains too high for too long, it can cause long-term changes to your vision.
Those with diabetes must undergo annual eye exams that focus on detecting early signs of diabetic eye diseases:
- Glaucoma: A group of progressive eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, leading to blindness.
- Cataracts: The clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which impacts the quality of vision. Although usually associated with age, diabetes can make cataracts develop earlier.
- Diabetic Retinopathy: An eye disease that causes the growth of abnormal blood vessels that supply the retina, which bulge, break, and leak, causing significant vision problems.
- Diabetic Macular Edema: A complication of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema leads to swelling of the macula and long-term central vision loss.
Children’s Eye Exams
Children’s eyes are continually changing. Eye conditions that develop during childhood can worsen over time if they’re not properly treated and managed. Because children rely so heavily on their eyes to explore their world and learn essential skills, regular eye exams are crucial in maintaining their health and supporting their growth.
Nearly 1 in 5 preschool children have an eye condition in the United States. Undiagnosed vision problems can impact your child’s school performance, social interactions, self-esteem, and overall development.
Protecting your child’s vision and development begins with routine eye exams. We build a relationship with your child and instill a passion for their eyes that will help them develop healthy, eye-friendly habits throughout their life.
Digital Eye Strain
Many Americans spend upwards of 12 hours a day looking at a digital screen. From computers to tablets to smartphones to TVs, our lives revolve around these devices. While they have made our lives more convenient in many ways, they are also leading to an increase in digital eye strain.
It’s not the devices themselves that cause digital eye strain, but how we use them. Any intense focus on one task will put stress on your eyes and their muscles, leading to uncomfortable symptoms like:
- Dry eyes
- Eye fatigue
- Headaches
- Blurred vision
- Neck and shoulder pain
Computers and other devices are more likely to cause eye strain because:
- We blink less while using computers, leading to dry eyes.
- We view digital devices at less than ideal distances and angles.
- We use devices that have glare or reflection.
- We use devices with poor contrast between the screen and our environment.
